The birth of lucian
Hi Sam - we thought we would let you know we have welcomed our baby boy, Lucian, earth side on Sunday 20/09 @ 11.41am.
On Thursday 17/09 I had a sweep and 6hrs later I lost my plug.
Around 12pm on Saturday 19/09, my membranes released and shortly after I started experiences mild surges which indicated early labour had begun!
About 7hrs later (about 7pm) my surges were intensifying significantly, and were much closer together, so we thought it would be best to head to hospital.
We were checked into the birth suite abut 8pm and this is about where my birthing preferences had gone out the window.
However, thanks to hypnobirthing, we were equipped with the positive mindset to make informed decisions if something wasn’t inline with our preferences!
For example, my goal was initially to have no pain relief, however after about 10hrs of early labour, I changed my mind and asked for gas. I know I mostly wanted to avoid an epidural if I could help it!
After about another 14hrs of labour and intense surges, I was fully dilated (yay!), however bubs had spun around during my surges and was now occiput posterior.
To help get bubs out, we needed help. We opted for ventouse, which meant I also needed an episiotomy & oxytocin drip. None of which were part of my birth preferences, but they were necessary to help me welcome baby Lucian earth side.
His entry was long and a bit traumatic for him so they took him away very briefly for a quick preliminary check up before mum & dad got some good hours of skin on skin.
We also couldn’t opt for cord clamping or unassisted delivery of the placenta, due to ventouse and episiotomy, but we had our baby in our arms and that was everything to us.
While the gas helped take the edge off a little bit, it was listening to my amazing birth partner, Chris, that really helped guide me through labour. By using light touch massage and just holding me physically & emotionally, Chris helped me through my labour and birth! We also had the ‘Affirmations for Beautiful Birthing’ on repeat in the birth suite for all to hear during the entire labour and birth, which was super helpful!
Thank you for your hypnobirthing class, I am not sure we would have been able to make it through 24hrs of labouring without it! 🙏 💙
