the birth of Luna
Hey there Sam!
Here’s what happened throughout the birth (sorry it’s a bit long):
At 41weeks + 1day I went to into early labour. My contractions lasted 30-40secs and occurred every 7-12mins. I was in the early stages of labour for about 24 hours before my waters broke (listening to “opening lotus flower sound track” - how amazing is that)! During this time, I did not use any form of pain relief (except for a Tens Machine). My fiancé and I managed to go out for our last dinner date and got as much rest as I could throughout the day.
When my waters finally broke, the amniotic fluid was mixed with meconium so straight to the hospital we went for monitoring. Since my early stages of labour was lasting quite some time, with little to no progression (where my partner and I tried to naturally induce labour - acupressure, walking, light touch and massage) and my amniotic fluid was mixed with meconium, the use of oxytocin was suggested. I believe it was best to use this as I had already been labouring for 24 hours. I was on the drip with oxytocin for about 5 hours (now 12am the next day after already labouring for 29 hours now). I had only dilate 3cm! We waited another 5 hours and I was only dilated 5cm! Then another 3 hours and still 5cm! I tried all different positions (walking, hugging the back of the bed, dancing with my partner and sitting on the toilet) - nothing seemed to be progressing. After approx 36 hours of labour at around 8am on Tuesday morning I got rushed into theatre to have a cesarean. Finally little Luna was born.
After the birth my midwife explained that she was on a bit of a funny angle in my stomach so when I was having a contraction she wasn’t coming out the right way - thus I wasn’t progressing. After birth Luna also had a bit of fluid in her lungs so she had to stay in the nursery for 3 nights. We came home on Friday night.
She’s now almost 1 month old and we’re all safe and happy and full of love and doing amazing!
I honestly think the whole situation, especially being a first time mum, would have been completely overwhelming and I strongly believe without preparing myself through the amazing course you taught us, I wouldn’t have coped with the drastic changes in my birth plan as well as I did. I was able to use the breathing techniques when I was rushed into theatre to help calm my nerves and Liam was by my side 100% of the time - playing relaxing birth music and listening to sound tracks in the birth suite and comforting me throughout the surgery.
We couldn’t have done it without you, Sam! Thanks for preparing us and making us comfortable throughout what would have been a very traumatic experience 💕.
Thank you much again Sam XO.
Much appreciation!
Liam, Leyla and Luna.
