Being my first baby I had mixed emotions especially around how I would manage my labour. I felt the only way I could deal with any negative thoughts was to prepare myself just as I as would for anything else that I wanted to be successful at.
I decided to do a hypnobirthing course with Samantha Geraghty. I am so thankful I did this course as I found it instilled so much confidence in both myself and my partner Tom. It gave us all the skills we needed to create a quiet positive mindset that would enable my body to do what it needed to to, I began to trust my body. Tom found he had a detailed idea about how he to be a good birth partner, which made me feel calm and supported.
I prepared my body and mind as outlined by the course. I walked daily and did yoga up until a day before I gave birth. I listened to my relaxation tracks and positive birth affirmations daily. I hung up important birth affirmations on the walls around my house. I visualised my perfect birth and practised my breathing. My partner practised how he would be supporting me.
My best friend alex would also be present at my birth and was well accustomed to my birth plan. I was 1 week overdue and was fearful I was going to be induced but I had to remind myself to trust my body. I went into labour at 6am on the 14th of may. My waters broke at 9.30am and my contractions were about 4-5min apart. The midwives at the hospital said I should make my way in but I really wanted my labour to progress at home and as this was my first I was prepared for a longer labour.
By lunchtime my contractions were 2-3min apart and we made our way into the hospital. By the time our paper work was processed I felt I had little time to recover between contractions and was found to be fully dilated. I was rushed into my room and got straight in the shower. I was blessed to have a midwife from the birthing centre who was well accustomed to natural births and let me do what I instinctively felt I needed to do.
Although I had no time to use my music, aromatherapy or even get my birth plan out I was able to get myself into a deeply focused, relaxed and trusting state. I declined gas and any pain relief as my body had it sorted, I knew I could do it. I was in the exact state of mind I had learnt about in the course and practised leading up to my birth.
I laboured in the shower for about 40 min in various positions but with the midwifes suggestion ended up birthing my baby on the bed which took a total of 57 min from when I first started pushing. My beautiful wee boy Remy was born at 2.27pm weighing 7 pound 8 ounces and is perfectly healthy. It was exactly how I had imagined my birth would go and felt so proud of myself. I really felt that my support team protected my experience and advocated for me when any intervention was suggested which I am thankful for as it is hard to make decisions when you are birthing a child.
It was overall the best experience of my life and by far my greatest achievement. I wish all women the same elating experience.
